Job Description
The Senior Manager of Neurobehavioral Phenotyping is a behavioral neuroscientist with extensive expertise in phenotyping mouse models of neurological disorders and aging. The successful candidate will provide scientific and technical leadership within the Center for Biometric Analysis (CBA) in mouse neurobehavioral phenotyping for a range of biomedical domains including neurodegenerative diseases, neurodevelopmental disorders, substance use and other psychiatric disorders, neuromuscular disorders, and aging. This experienced, PhD level scientist supports the strategic vision for the Jackson Laboratory’s (JAX) CBA, and has direct oversight of core facility infrastructure, staff, and operations for neurobehavioral phenotyping. They will deliver sustained growth and development of neurobehavioral activities within the CBA. This scientist will be responsible for collaborating with JAX Faculty and staff at all levels including junior technical staff, postdocs and senior scientists, to provide training, consultation on experimental design, study execution, data analysis and biological interpretation. Development and implementation of new platforms and technologies, and adaptation of established phenotyping paradigms to test on wild-derived mouse strains, will be another major component of the role.
Responsibilities:
· Provide scientific leadership and technical excellence in neurobehavioral phenotyping. This includes:
o Leading experimental design discussions with users and delivering the practical execution, quality control, analysis and biological interpretation of data from phenotyping experiments. Ensuring the quality, traceability, integrity and security of data and analyses delivered to users. Preparing data summaries, content for grant submissions and leading or assisting with manuscript preparation;
o Providing training and guidance to users of neurobehavioral phenotyping platforms in the CBA;
o Remaining current in research technologies and paradigms through literature review, and attending, presenting and leading seminars, workshops, courses and conferences;
o Leading the oversight, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment.
· Deliver operational excellence in neurobehavioral phenotyping by ensuring the following:
o Development of metrics that monitor team performance allowing for timely training interventions and engendering an environment that positively embraces continual improvement;
o Development and maintenance of accurate and high quality standard operating procedures that meet modern standards for research reproducibility;
o Accurate and timely scheduling of work aligned with management of a forward thinking skills matrix and training plan;
o Seamless liaison with other Phenotyping Cores within the CBA team for projects spanning multiple biological disciplines
o Accurate and timely generation of quotations and invoices via iLAB;
o Three year horizon capacity planning that ensures requested budget aligns with labor, capital and operational costs;
o Optimal procurement and maintenance of capital equipment and associated service contracts;
o Compliance with IACUC and development of new Routine Procedures.
· Develop, on-board and optimize new technology platforms and new protocols for existing platforms based on projected demand from clients and developments in the field of mouse genetics and neurobehavior.
· Demonstrate superlative leadership and line management skills to build and maintain a highly productive, engaged, professional, and competent team, ensuring data quality lies at the center of all that you do, whilst recognizing the need for fiscal prudence and time sensitivities.
Qualifications:
· PhD and ≥5 years’ experience in a relevant discipline with direct experience and demonstrable knowledge of neurobehavioral phenotyping in mice, as evidenced by a strong publication record. Proven track record in the execution, analysis and interpretation of a wide range of neurobehavioral phenotyping including cognition, social behavior, motor and fine motor function, addiction, depression, anxiety, psychosis, nociception, neurophysiology and aging.
· ≥5 years’ recent experience setting-up, validating and consistently conducting outstanding scientific research using gold standard neurobehavioral phenotyping platforms in mice.
· Demonstrated success in establishing SOPs, providing competency and validation training to users, and monitoring the validity of data, thereby assuring operations are within set tolerances for efficiency, delivery and quality.
· Demonstrable experience managing a successful, fiscally disciplined scientific operation, preferably a core service, within established IACUC guidelines, and regulatory & safety standards.
· Must thrive in the team setting and exhibit enthusiasm for work in a dynamic, deadline driven, high-performance, service environment.
· Successful candidates must be comfortable consulting with research staff and other facility users to assure quality experimental design and execution. In this context, excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
· Excellent communication skills and experience are also required for contributing material towards grant applications, and writing publications, project plans, animal protocols, and interfacing with the IACUC.
· ≥5 years’ management experience leading scientific teams.
